John is a freelance Jazz guitarist from London. He began playing the guitar at the age of 11, inspired by his father (John Greenwood Sr.) who had been a singer-songwriter in the 1960s and with whom John received his earliest musical instruction. Developing his playing in the styles of Blues and Rock in his teens, John arrived into the world of Jazz at the age of 16. From that moment John committed to the genre, and set his aspirations on pursuing it further, into higher education. After leaving school John began performing and teaching music in London. He formed partnerships with several London-based musicians including the highly regarded Jazz harmonica player Vincenzo Fratelli and double-bassist Omri Schitrit. In 2011 John also began playing in a duo with the Soul/R&B singer Sophie Brown (Fille De La Lune). Fille De La Lune and John gained a residency at Camden's Proud Galleries where they performed regularly, in addition to various other venues in and around central London. Together they also recorded and released an EP, which was launched at New Cross' Amersham Arms. They played numerous festivals over the summers of 2011 and 2012 including: Shambala Festival, Beach Break Live, the Hay Festival and the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. Having been taught by several world-renowned Jazz musicians including Dave Cliff and Ant Law John gained a place to study at the Birmingham conservatoire in 2012 and relocated that year. He completed his studies in 2016, having been under the tutorship of Jez Franks, Fred T Baker and Mark Hodgson and participating in classes with Jean Toussaint, Percy Pursglove, Mike Williams, Hans Koller and Andrew Bain. It was in Birmingham that John started his Quartet, featuring Jacky Naylor on piano, Sam Ingvorsen on bass and Jakub Valíček on drums. They performed publicly for the first time in February 2014 at the Yardbird Jazz club. John also taught at the Birmingham Music School, a Yamaha Music Point, where he has taught over 100 guitarists and had 30 of his own students. Currently living in Porto (Portugal), John is enjoying life as the CTO of music-based startup LessonWith while struggling to learn Portuguese.
